Overview
Tasks are the building blocks of every project and help you visualize both the project work breakdown structure and timeline. After you create a task, there are a variety of details you can set and task actions you can perform, such as entering task details, creating task dependencies, nesting tasks, and more.
There are several areas where you can create a task, including:
- The Task Tracker
- The Local Gantt chart
- A project Template
- Using the API
In this article, we’ll cover how to create a task in the Task Tracker, the Local Gantt chart, and a project template.

Creating a Task from the Task Tracker
- In the left navigation, click Projects, and then select the desired project on the Projects page.
- In the project workspace, click the Task Tracker tab.
- In the top-right corner of the Task Tracker, click Add Task.
- The new task appears at the top of the Task Tracker table with the title New Task. Click in the Title field to enter a new task name.
Note: If you want to add a subtask, click the Actions iconin the new task row and then select Add Subtask Below. - If desired, enter and/or select options for the remaining task columns. The available task columns will vary depending on how you’ve configured your Task Tracker table column.
- Repeat steps 3-5 for every task you would like to add.
- To adjust the task order, click and hold the Reorder icon
on the left side of the task row and then drag it to the new position.
Creating a Task from the Local Gantt Chart
- In the left navigation, click Projects, and then select the desired project on the Projects page.
- In the project workspace, click the Gantt tab.
- In the top-right corner of the Gantt chart, click Add Task.
- The new task appears at the bottom of the Tasks list with the title New Task. Double-click in the Name field to enter a new task title.
- If desired, enter and/or select options for the remaining task columns.
- Repeat steps 3-5 for every task you would like to add.
- To move the task higher in the Tasks list, click and drag the task row to the new position.
Creating a Task from a Project Template
- In the left navigation, click Templates, and then select the desired template on the Project Templates page.
- Under the Tasks tab on the Edit Template page, click the Add Task button. The new task appears at the bottom of the Tasks list.
- Double click the Task field to enter the task name.
- If desired, enter and/or select options for the remaining task fields.
- Repeat steps 2-4 for every task you would like to add to the template.
- To move the task higher in the Tasks list, click the Drag icon
and move the task to the new position. - Click Save at the top of the page to save the task to the template. Once the template is applied to a project, all template tasks will automatically populate.
Tip: You can also create a new task by selecting the Title field of the last task in the table then pressing Enter on your keyboard. The new task will be created at the same WBS level as the last task.
