Overview
Expertise Insights is Kantata’s new AI-powered Business Intelligence platform. Featuring generative BI features that allow you to ask questions in natural language and instantly generate dashboards and insights, Expertise Insights empowers everyone in an organization and speeds up decision-making. We’re excited to partner with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide this powerful BI platform that will transform the way you deliver services.
Key Concepts and Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Analysis | An analysis contains visuals, tables, and other visual elements. An analysis can be published as a dashboard then shared with others. The analysis editor can only be accessed by users with an Author license type. |
| Author | Users with the Author license type can create analyses, dashboards, and visuals. Users with the Author Pro license type also have access to advanced generative BI capabilities. |
| Calculated fields | Calculated fields—or calculations—are created by transforming data using functionality such as arithmetic operations, aggregate functions, conditional functions, and more. |
| Dashboard | A dashboard is a published analysis. Dashboards can be shared with other users. Only users with the Author license type can publish dashboards. |
| Datasets | A dataset is a data source that powers analyses and dashboards. A dataset is made up of of measures, dimensions, and dates. Expertise Insights comes with several standard datasets. Authors can also create custom datasets. |
| Dimensions | Dimensions are the qualitative values used in visuals, such as text or date fields. In Kantata, dimensions are values such as projects, users, roles, etc. |
| Measures | Measures are the numerical values used in visuals, and are often aggregated by dimensions. In Kantata, measures are values such as fees, actual hours, expense amounts, etc. |
| Reader | Users with the Reader license type can view and interact with dashboards. Users with the Reader Pro license type also have access to advanced generative BI capabilities. |
| Sheet | Analyses and dashboards are organized into sheets (i.e. tabs). In the standard dashboards, each sheet focuses on a specific lens: financial summary, time utilization, project delivery health, etc. |
| Stories | Stories allow you to turn data into compelling narratives using generative BI capabilities. |
| Topic | A topic is a collection of data fields from one or more datasets, representing a specific subject area. Users can ask questions about a topic in the Ask Insights feature and receive answers in the form of AI-generated summaries and visuals. |
| Visual | A visual—or report—is a graphical representation of data, such as a bar chart, donut chart, heat map, line chart, etc. |
Viewing and Interacting with Dashboards
When you have been given access to Expertise Insights, a new Insights link appears in the left navigation. Hover over Insights then select Dashboards Home to open Expertise Insights.
The following links are available in the left menu of Expertise Insights.
- Favorites—Manage your favorite dashboards and analyses.
- Recent—View your recently accessed dashboards and analyses.
- My folders—Organize dashboards and analyses into folders. Only available for Authors.
- Shared folders—Access folders shared with you.
- Dashboards—View and manage dashboards.
- Stories—View and manage stories, which are documents that walk through analyses and are created using generative BI.
- Analyses—View and manage analyses. Only available for Authors.
- Datasets—View and manage datasets, which are the data sources that dashboards and analyses pull from. Only available for Authors.
- Topics—View and manage topics, which power the Ask Insights functionality. Only available for Authors.
Additionally, an Ask Insights button appears in the app bar. Ask Insights is a generative BI feature of Expertise Insights that allows you to ask questions using natural language and get quick answers in the form of AI-generated summaries and visuals (i.e. reports). Visuals can be saved to your personal Pinboard.

Standard Dashboards and Datasets
Expertise Insights comes with several standard dashboards that provide information on key business metrics such as profitability, utilization, and staffing availability:
- Kantata - Delivery
- Kantata - Finance
- Kantata - Resourcing
- Kantata - Resourcing (Scheduled)
- Kantata - Time
Expertise Insights also comes with several standard datasets, which power the standard dashboards and can be used for custom dashboards. In Expertise Insights, data fields are separated into multiple datasets, making it easier to find relevant data fields when building dashboards. You can use the standard datasets when building custom dashboards or create your own custom datasets to power your custom dashboards.
For more information about datasets, see the Standard Datasets Overview article.
Custom Dashboards and Datasets
Authors can manage and create custom dashboards. You can clone the standard dashboards and modify them according to your requirements, or create new dashboards and build them from scratch.
In Expertise Insights, you build analyses and publish them as dashboards. Analyses contain visuals (i.e. reports) as well as other elements, such as text, images, etc.
Measures and dimensions are the building blocks for visuals.
- Measures—Measures are the numerical values used in visuals, and are often aggregated by dimensions. Measures are the what of reporting. In Kantata, measures are values such as fees, actual hours, expense amounts, etc.
- Dimensions—Dimensions are the qualitative values used in visuals, such as text or date fields. Measures are the how of reporting. In Kantata, dimensions are values such as projects, users, roles, etc.
For more information, see the Analyses and Dashboards Overview and Visuals Overview articles.
Datasets power analyses and dashboards. You can clone the standard datasets and modify them according to your requirements or create your own custom datasets—built on top of existing datasets or from external data sources—to power your custom dashboards.
For more information, see the Managing Custom Datasets article.
Managing Access to Expertise Insights
There are several aspects that affect access to Expertise Insights and dashboards:
- License—Users must have an Expertise Insights license. Users can be provisioned and deprovisioned in Insights > Manage Users.
- Share dashboard—Authors can share dashboards with groups or individual users via the Share icon on a dashboard.
- Expertise Insights Access Group set—This permission controls who can go into Insights > Manage Users and manage user groups and data access settings.
Data Refresh Rate
Expertise Insights data refreshes every hour. Every hour, the system takes a snapshot of your data, processes it, and then loads the new data into Expertise Insights.
Datasets contain the underlying data for dashboards. Standard datasets, custom datasets, and custom field datasets refresh automatically. To see when a dataset was last refreshed, follow the steps below.
- In the left navigation, hover over Insights, then select Dashboards Home.
- Select Datasets from the left menu.
- In the datasets list, locate the dataset, then check the Last Modified date.
Generative BI
Expertise Insights has several generative BI features and capabilities to help you build reports and dashboards, find quick answers to questions, turn data into narratives, and guide strategic decisions.
For information about all generative BI features in Expertise Insights, see the Generative BI Overview article.
