Overview
The default cost rates and bill rates for all new projects are based on your account settings:
-
Cost Rate—The cost rate for account members is set in the Account Member side panel and the default cost rate for unnamed resources is the average of all cost rates entered for members with that same role.
Note: Only account members with Report Viewer with Cost (or higher) Account Permissions can see and update cost rate information.
- Bill Rate—Bill rates are set using the roles defined on Rate Cards. If your account is not using Rate Cards, an account member’s bill rate is set in the Account Member side panel.
There may be instances where you want to change the cost rate or bill rate for one project. For example, you may want to reduce cost rates to apply a discount for a specific project. From the Rates & Roles page, you can modify cost rates on a per-project basis. If Rate Cards are not activated on your account, you can modify bill rates as well.
Here are a few considerations when overriding cost rates or bill rates:
- When you modify rates for an account member, an asterisk (“ * ”) will appear next to the new rate and you can hover over the asterisk to see what the default rate is.
- If you can modify the bill rate of an unnamed resource, there is no visual indication when the bill rate has been modified from the default rate.
Note: To override bill rates for unnamed resources, the Override Bill Rates feature must be activated for your account and Rate Cards must not be activated. To learn more about activating Override Bill Rates, contact Customer Success.

- Team members will not be assigned bill rates if:
- Rate Cards are not activated on the account and the project currency does not match the default currency in account settings.
- Rate Cards are activated, but the role on the project is not included in the rate card.
- Rate Cards are not activated and they do not have an account Bill Rate.
- Cost Rates will default to 0 if the member doesn't have a cost rate for that currency.
- Based on account settings, you may not be able to add roles that are not included in a project’s Rate Card, which can help reduce the number of overrides needed.
- Rate and role overrides affect both Insights and Margin cost reports. Rate differences are reflected based on the selected project.
